- Big Bang 2007. Atlantis is cut off from Earth.
- Summary
- The Ancients' genes didn't just confer the power to activate their technology. For ten percent of Earth's population, like John Sheppard, the ATA gene also gave them Gifts: special abilities that made them admired, envied, and feared.
Sheppard was a Charmer, one of the feared ones, whose particular Gift let him create faith whenever he needed to be trusted or believed. But Sheppard didn't trust himself not to destroy what he loved most. And somewhere along the line, amid the terror and chaos of the Expedition's first year in the Pegasus Galaxy, what Sheppard loved most had become Rodney McKay.
McKay didn't trust anyone. As soon as you started trusting people, you started counting on them, depending on them, and that was when you became vulnerable. And vulnerable things didn't survive. So just when, exactly, had he started trusting Sheppard?
And what was going to happen, now that he did?

What started out as a humanitarian effort to heal the kids becomes something more as they begin to find their way in this new universe, like their own but different in fundamental ways. They change the very fabric of Atlantis, and a few meddling kids might be what certain people need to realize what's right in front of their faces.

It really challenged me as a writer—I've never written anything like this, I knew it would be hard to pull off, and I'm still not sure I did. But I learned a lot, and none of this would have been possible without the help of a great group of people to be thanked in the end notes. I wrote literally from the first day of the challenge to the very last, and all remaining errors are mine for the writing. So...*whew* I hope it's entertaining at the very least.

- First of all I'd like to thank oriolegirl, my main beta, who was with me right from the start and helped me through the six versions of plots and prompts that I tried and discarded again. She also was my cheerleader and kicked me into motion every time I felt as if I couldn't get any further. Without her and her e-mails this fic wouldn't exist. Big thanks go also to my second beta mairi_, who did a wonderful job and elissahra who helped with suggestions about plot and grammar. I thank you so much!
The Biggest inspiration for this story was my (sometimes very annoying but very patient) brother Woodstock who talked the plot through with me at least a dozen times, suggested surroundings and names and gave me inspiration with his Iceland photographs and movie collection. Thank you so much!
Another important role in this (a little unusual) approach on an amnesia!fic was the music of several Scandinavian music groups like Värttina, Vasen, Garmarna and Hedningarna. This kind of folk music may not be everyone's taste but it certainly helped me to imagine the world in which I let the story play and with time it also gave the Original Characters their own little theme music.
A complete list of all OC names and their meanings can be found at the end of the Story, there are also songs named that belong to the characters and might be interesting.
I hope you will enjoy reading the story as much as I enjoyed writing it.

- Warnings: Explicit Smut, Mention of rape (not of primary characters) Blood, Vampires, Werewolves, Mad Science, Graphic Violence
Note: This is a completely AU setting for Stargate. The world is an alternate history version of our own world with a few radical changes. The first is that magic is real and works. The second is the presence of supernatural races that live, work, love and fight with normal humans. Most notable of these are the Werewolves and the Vampires. The third is that it is a steampunk setting - The technology of this world is at once far ahead of modern technology as we know it and yet far behind. There are airships and huge steam-powered mechs, lots of steel and brass and, of course, goggles. These three factors have changed history as we know it.
Atlantis is a city built by the Ancients. It lay at the bottom of the sea for centuries waiting to be rediscovered. Five months ago an Expedition came though the Gateway and brought the city back to the surface.
Thanks: HUGE thanks to the John/Elizabeth contingent of the challenge for the community support. BIG thanks to the people who did Beta work for me: Calleigh_j, Irony_rocks, and Oparuz. Special shout outs to Havocthecat and Anuna_81 who spent hours in chat commiserating about our fics ;)

Here, the Ancients' genes didn't just confer the power to activate their technology. For ten percent of Earth's population, the ATA gene also gave them Gifts: special abilities that made them admired, envied, and feared, and that came with a price….

Amid this, Rodney meets Caius, the 21 year old best hope for a scientist the Satedans can offer, and the role of science in destroying and rebuilding worlds becomes a point of contention for everyone involved - Satedans and Lanteans alike.

My entire friends list on LJ was awesome, not only putting up with my Big Bang spam/whining, but offering encouragement. Muzzle was very nice to let me call and yell at him for talking me into this, as well as talking me down from the ledge every other week, and a big <3 to Jadesfire and Friendshipper for their support for all of Group 11. I would also like to thank Leesa Perrie, who cheerleaded above and and beyond the call of duty, and helped me keep my sanity and hope throughout this process.
My betas, though, deserve the biggest thanks of all. For Gayle, who put up with the very rough updates, and then read an entire novel for me in a day... I've told you you're awesome, right? We're not even mentioning the phone calls in traffic to try and work out plot bits. And for Kristen, who not only volunteered to beta this in addition to her own Big Bang (and offering very helpful suggestions), but for all of the research help, the tips on motorcycles, and the millions of write-offs... this thing wouldn't have happened without you. - Betaed by Celctic_tigress (who helped me as all my other betas were too busy), test read by Woodstock (my brother, who talked me through this for endless hours and did the victory dance alongside me)and Beasty101. All remaining mistakes and plotholes are mine.
The whole thing was inspired by the last couple of seconds of the Episode "Sunday", the fact that Rodney just couldn't go out of this as easy as he did in the plot, at least not in my opinion, and my love for the name Meredith. It's just pre-slash and touches a lot of plots that run along outside of the story just like a real episode would, or at least that was what I meant it to look like. Also, I used several spoilers for the real season 4!
Titles inspired by Dr. Who, several movies and "Goodnight Elizabeth" by the "Counting crows" (mentioned through the first dream sequence).
English isn't my native language and this was by far the biggest story I ever wrote, (and posted afterwards) driving me halfway insane in the process, but my brother Woodstock grounded me and helped me through the writer's block and plotholes: This story is for you as thanks for your endless patience and the fact that you had time to talk me through the plot although you had to get ready for your university-entrance diploma at the same time.

"Well, I don't necessarily have to ascend, right? I can just stay all highly evolved and channel Jean Grey—no, not Dark Phoenix—wait, what, woah. Ascend or die? Those are really shitty options you're giving me here." He took a step back, running a hand through his sweaty hair as he tried to process. "Damnit, Elizabeth, this is not fascinating, it's my life." Author's Notes: I can't believe I'm actually attempting this. It must be noted that while I stick to basic plot outlines for seasons three and four, this is much more than simply sticking Carson into the episodes. Having Carson alive and well in the city changes the entire dynamic of the situations the citizens of Atlantis find themselves in. Thanks: You've heard the saying that it takes a village to raise a child. Well, this fic needed a village to raise it. In the early stages of figuring this story out, all the members of my Big Bang Support group -- chase_a_cow, eccentricweft and sageness -- provided insights and ideas which helped me immensely, and later, their cheerleading sustained me through seeing the fic to the end.
gypsytpotter and tacittype provided invaluable "virgin eyes" beta services, and as always, went above and beyond to provide constructive criticism, canon knowledge and cheerleading. At a critical time, cindyjade provided her unique and valuable perspective and beta eye, not to mention an infusion of much-appreciated enthusiasm.
And last, but far, far from least: rheanna27 and shaenie. Let me put it this way: whatever this story is, it is far, far better than it ever would have been without their amazing and generously honest critique, hand-holding, idea generation, writing help, and insights.
